Neck Strap for Chin Controller
A bespoke control system was fabricated to enable the client, Sally, to operate a sailing dinghy using a chin-operated joystick. This work replicates and adapts the successful electric steering modifications previously completed on another boat.
The system consists of a neck-strap mount constructed from bent 6 mm stainless steel rod. A crossbeam, adjustable in height, is attached to the neck-strap and supports a horizontal 8 mm stainless steel rod protruding forward. A vertical ball joint is mounted on this rod, allowing positional adjustment both toward and away from the client and providing rotational flexibility. The vertical orientation is maintained via a flat machined surface along the rod.
The ball joint supports a small table with a Velcro-facing surface, which can be locked in any angular position. This table is designed to carry the chin-operated joystick, allowing Sally to control the boat’s electrically driven tiller comfortably and safely. The design permits fine adjustment to suit the client’s individual needs, ensuring usability, stability, and repeatable positioning.
