Stump Boards for Right Below-Knee Amputation
Client is an inpatient at RDH following a recent right below-knee amputation. He owns both a self-propelled and an electric wheelchair and required stump boards for each to support his healing limb. NHS provisions were not suitable due to wheelchair design, necessitating bespoke adaptations.
Self-Propelled Wheelchair
The wheelchair seat consists of canvas stretched across the frame, with a loosely fitted cushion for comfort. A stump board was constructed as an extension beneath the cushion, using the client’s weight to hold it in place. Cut-outs were made in the board to accommodate seat fixings, ensuring stability. The board was shaped to provide proper support for the below-knee stump, which rests downward at rest, and positioned to allow maneuverability through tight corners and doorways. Materials included 12 mm MDF shaped to fit, with foam padding and a leather cover for comfort.
Electric Wheelchair
Mounting options were limited on the electric wheelchair. A horizontal bar beneath the seat was identified as a secure attachment point. Custom brackets were 3D-printed to clamp onto this bar, and a 15.5 mm × 15.5 mm aluminium hollow square bar was used to connect the brackets to the stump board. The height and position were adjusted to suit the below-knee stump, and foam with a leather cover provided the required comfort.
Both adaptations provide stable, padded support for the client’s amputated leg, accommodating comfort, positioning, and safe mobility. Photographs and figures illustrate board placement, attachment methods, and positioning of the stump.
