Bespoke External Platform for Wheeled Zimmer Frame

Brian uses a wheeled Zimmer frame and is currently in a care home, with plans to return home following a successful recovery. Access to his home is via a 200 mm high step. A half-step provided outside the front door measures 100 mm high × 760 mm wide × 440 mm deep, which is insufficient to accommodate the full depth of the client’s Zimmer frame (550 mm), creating a safety concern when entering or exiting the property.

A bespoke external platform was designed and constructed to provide safe, stable access. The platform was built using decking boards supported on treated 47 × 47 mm timber framing. The finished platform measures 800 mm deep × 760 mm wide, providing sufficient space for the entire Zimmer frame and additional clearance for safe stepping.

The platform is fixed securely in place, ensuring stability under the client’s weight and the mobility aid. This bespoke adaptation allows safe, independent access to the home without the need for a ramp, addressing the limitations of the existing step.
