Bespoke Arm Guards for Protection

Alex currently wears a home made arm/wrist protector splint to prevent him biting and injuring himself. He wears them on both hands/wrist but his right hand is stronger and the one he can cause himself more injury to. His mum has made it using a padded support, a bath sponge and tubigrip but it is falling apart and not robust enough to meet Alex’s needs. It also moves with his movement. OT has tried to look at ‘off the shelf options’ (bite resistant arm guards) from the internet but none suitable due to the pressure Alex puts through the fabric and risk of bruising/injury .

Client wears home-made arm/hand guards to prevent him from biting and injuring himself. A number of solutions were suggested from the sports area- shin guards for hockey and armguards from martial arts.  Eventually mother, who is principal carer, said that that what she actually wanted was replacement armguards previously supplied by Derbyshire orthotics and which had now worn out. (See picture.)  New guards were produced from neoprene using velcro strips to secure.  Moher then said she needed some way to tether these and to add to the padding over the back of the hand. Adding a foam pad and another layer of neoprene in these areas was investigated but, with only a domestic sewing machine available, this was impractical.  A second sheet of armguards was produced along with padded inserts that can be secured inside the guards at a position of choice.  This seemed to meet the requirements and the additional armguards were delivered on 10/06/2026.
