Raising a Sofa to Restore Independence

Steven was unable to stand up safely from his sofa because it was too low. As he lives alone, he had stopped using it altogether and was spending most of his time in bed, as this was the only place he could stand from independently.

Standard furniture raisers were unsuitable because of the sofa’s design. REMAP volunteers therefore built a bespoke timber platform that raised the sofa to the correct height while keeping it stable and secure. The frame was finished to match the appearance of the existing furniture.

The simple adaptation has enabled Steven to use his sofa safely again, restoring comfort, independence, and a more normal daily routine.
